The Kubera Principle

The Kubera Principle

The Book That Will Change the World

In today’s video, I will tell you 5 strategies I adopted to network in order to land at my current job. Before we get into the details I will tell you a little bit about my career journey. After completing my undergrad in electrical engineering I started working as a design engineerin in large telecom company in India. After working for 2 years, I worked for a startup in India before coming to the US for my masters program in data science and analytics in the US. After completing my masters I worked at a bank in Virginia for 2 years and currently I am leading a team of 3 data scientist for a fintech company in California.

So now I will tell you 5 strategies I adopt to network for job search

Tap into your school network – The way I landed interview for my current employer is because somebody posted in my school’s alumni group. I have joined the alumni groups on LinkedIn and Facebook of my both undergrad and masters school and people often post job openings in their company. I reached out to the person who posted a job opening and the person was very helpful in providing a referral to me in her team. I got an interview call almost 3 months after I was referred for this job. So you have to have patience after you get the referrals.

The second strategy is tap into your acquaintances, friends and family

I enjoy going for hikes and I have a small group of friends and acquaintances from my hiking. One day while I was on a hike with my hiking group, I brought up the topic that I am currently looking for a new job and one of the person who I had barely talked to offered to refer me at his company. I forwarded my resume the next day and to my surprise I got the interview call with that company. So a good point to start would be to think about all the people you came in contact with and reach out to them and see if they can provide you with a referral at their company.

The third strategy is regular posting on linkedin

LinkedIn is one of the best marketing tool for job seekers. For the last 6 months, I have been regularly posting content related to Finance and Economics on LinkedIn at least once a week or once every 2 weeks and I see recruiters from Finance and FinTech space reach our to me at regular intervals. So one thing I can tell you from my experience is after turning on the setting that you are actively looking for a job, you should regularly make posts on LinkedIn. The posts that you make on LinkedIn should include keywords that your future employer would care about. So if you are looking for a job in data science then try to make posts related to data science and analytics.

The fourth and final strategy to network is attend professional events

After I completed my masters back in 2019, I attended a 7 day conference in Pennsylvania where industry experts from the field of asset management shared their knowledge. It was a great opportunity for me to personally connect not only with leaders in the world of asset management but also a lot of managers in senior positions across different finance companies. I tapped into that precious network when I was switching from my previous job. So my advice to you would be to start attending local conferences and events to build and increase your network, which you can tap into for job search.

So in summary, as the old saying goes “Your network is your net worth”. If you are searching for a job, it is not only important to market yourself in your existing network but also expand your visibility in networks beyond your current network.
